Behind the Scenes: Goddess Candle Collection
I’ve always been fascinated with Greek, Roman and Egyptian Goddesses. Their stories were wild and ancient and filled me with wonder when I first heard them as a child. I set out to create something completely one of a kind, based on these stories from ancient times.
When I started my research, I wanted it to feel like you had a piece of ancient art in your home. I also wanted to honor each Goddess by including her individual symbols, iconography and scents. I didn’t see what I was looking for out in the world, so I knew I would have to make it myself. Thus began the long 6 month process of the creation of Aphrodite.
Forging Aphrodite
Each candle in this series is completely hand-made from start to finish. I began the process by sculpting each goddess from clay in my interpretation of each goddess.
Making the Mold
After the clay has been fired and hardened, the next step was to create the mold. I chose silicone for its ease in use and the ability to continually reuse. My vision was starting to come to life!
Fragrance Creation
The next step was to develop the signature scent. I knew this part would take some considerable time, so I got to work straight away. The goal for the fragrance for each candle had always been for them to honor each Goddess’s individual iconography. Goddesses have likes and dislikes, and to truly honor them, those would need to be taken into consideration. Aphrodite is the Goddess of love, beauty, passion and pleasure. She has long since inspired the world to connect on a deeper level to the pleasures of the world, and I wanted the fragrance to mirror that sentiment.
Her most iconic image is of her bursting forth from the sea in a giant scalloped shell in the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. Using this as my inspiration, the fragrance includes salt, teakwood and tangerine. The fragrance is intoxicating, warm and romantic.
Creating the Candle
Now begins the candle creation! There is a lot of science behind candle-making, that requires a lot of planning beforehand including finding the perfect wax, fragrance load, wicks etc. After a few rounds of perfecting the recipe, and testing the burn, fragrance hot/cold throw, the first finalized candle was made! Each candle is hand-poured with all natural soy wax, high quality fragrance and a cotton wick.
Stay tuned for more Goddess candles coming in 2021!
