Quilt Making 101: What do you need to make a Quilt?
Quilt Making 101: Episode One
Everything you need to make your own quilt…
Are you looking to understand the in’s and outs of making quilts? You’ve found the right place! Welcome to my new series called Quilt Making 101! I come from a long line of sewers and seamstresses so sewing is in my bones. I made my first quilt when I was 16 and its been an obsession since! I’ve learned a lot over the years through trial and error and I want to share all my knowledge and tips and tricks with anyone looking to start making their own quilts or clothing.
Below is a list of resources, tools and tips for how to set up your very own quilting studio! I will be continually adding to this list as I get new information, so continue to check in.
Resources
Below is a list of really great quilting, and sewing resources I’ve found over the years. Most of these quilters have not only many years of experience, but have a wide variety of offerings, tutorials and great ideas to get you started!
Quilter, farmer and dye maker!
Her work is so beautiful and she brings together my two great loves, sewing and gardening!
Such incredible designs and patterns, with a focus on art history, and how quilting has always been a radical practice
She has a zine that is amazing, highly recommend!
Great resource to find incredible quilt artists all over!
Natural dyed, hand stitched quilts.
Absolutely love following along with her process as she hand dyes her fabrics.
She focuses mostly on selling quilts, but wrote a great book with a bunch of quilt patterns and suggestions on how to get started quilting.
List of Tools
Make it stand out
Scissors & Thread Snippers
Arguably the most important tools you’ll need. Choosing scissors, nippers or a rotary cutter is very important, and if you take care of them they’ll last you a lifetime, I’ve already had mine for 17 years! See below for my recommendations:

Pins, Needles & Safety Pins
You can get these most fabric stores. Pins, sewing needles and safety pins are a must have, especially if you’re hand-quilting.
I also recommend a magnetic pin holder. They keep everything in one place without risk of losing pins and them ending up on the floor or stuck in your feet! The one I bought is a bit on the expensive size but it holds the most pins. There are lots of options!

Other Important Tools
Below is a list of some of my most used tools! The Frixion erasable pens are a MUST HAVE. I use them constantly when sketching out ideas on fabric, to remove all you need is heat, so put in the dryer or iron them away.
